Tools You Can Use

Action 1: Demand Reps to End Mass Surveillance Under Section 702

Word on The Hill is that a bill to reauthorize warrantless surveillance under Section 702 is about to be introduced any day now. Section 702 is the provision of law that gives federal intelligence agencies like the FBI authority to snatch up all kinds of online communications – from phone calls, emails, social media accounts, text messages, and more – and use the 'backdoor search loophole' to deliberately look for information on Americans without any suspicion of wrongdoing.

It’s a gross overstep of our privacy. Section 702 either needs to be overhauled to ensure innocent Americans won’t get spied on by the government, or it needs to expire. If we want to end warrantless mass surveillance and put a stop to Americans' communications from getting swept up in the NSA's dragnet, then we have to tell our reps in the House to act now.

Script: I’m [name] from [zip code]. I’m a constituent and I demand that [rep’s name] work to completely overhaul Section 702 to end warrantless mass cyber surveillance on innocent Americans. And it can’t be overhauled, then Section 702 should expire.

Action 2: Reject the NRA Rally and Vigil for Las Vegas 10/9

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Indivisible Chicago, and Women's March are partnering to take a stand against the NRA and to demand that congress address gun reform in our country.

The horrific shooting in Las Vegas forces us as a nation to decide: will we accept the status quo and allow mass shootings and gun homicides to be the backdrop to our daily lives? Or do we want to live in a country where we can go to the movies or a concert or school or work or church and be safe from gun violence?

We choose to honor the victims and survivors in Las Vegas by demanding that Congress reject the NRA leadership's radical and dangerous agenda for more guns for more people in more places, with no restrictions.

Join us on Monday, October 9 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Federal Plaza for a rally and to hear guest speakers who are on the forefront of the gun violence prevention movement. More details to be posted soon! RSVP here

Action 3: Show Up to Fight Voter Suppression on 10/17

Join Indivisible Chicago, along with State Representatives Ann Williams, Will Guzzardi, Jamie Andrade, and Carol Ammons, on Tuesday, October 17th to "Fill the Room" at the State Board of Elections meeting to show your support for our demand that Illinois immediately withdraw from the Interstate Crosscheck Program.

It's important that the Board see the overwhelming support that we have for this call and to force them to act before the next data transfer to Crosscheck in January. Crosscheck is a discriminatory system used to purge voters and promote voter suppression laws in our neighboring states. Read our FAQ to learn more.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 17, 2017 10:30am to 12:30pm
WHERE (two locations):
Chicago: Thompson Center, Room 2-025
Springfield: 2329 S. MacArthur Boulevard

RSVP here.

We will provide signs and ask attendees to be respectful and follow the rules of order of the meeting. Our intent is to have an overwhelming visible presence and ideally to get some media attention, but it is NOT to disrupt the meeting.
