Indivisible Chicago Alliance Endorses Marie Newman for Congress
Support for candidate in Illinois’ 3rd district is activist group’s first-ever endorsement
Responding to a recognized voice for progressive policy and values, the Indivisible Chicago Alliance has voted to extend its first-ever political endorsement to Marie Newman, candidate for Congress in Illinois’ 3rd district. While many members supported Newman in her 2016 challenge to Incumbent Congressman Dan Lipinski, the organization only recently established a formal endorsement process. Organization leaders report Newman won overwhelming approval from the Alliance’s leaders and 12 chapters.
“Marie is committed to making the economy work for all, guaranteeing health care as a human right--including sexual and reproductive health--protecting and expanding immigrants’ rights, and much more in alignment with our members’ values,” said Executive Director Darcey Regan. “That made this endorsement an easy choice for our chapters throughout the region.”
Indivisible Chicago is widely credited with providing the 2018 field support that helped flip Illinois’ Congressional districts 6 and 14, electing Representatives Sean Casten and Lauren Underwood. With an extensive volunteer base, the group has hundreds of active campaigners who support candidates through canvassing, phone-banking, postcards and other strategies to get out the vote. This is a key reason why Newman welcomes Indivisible Chicago’s endorsement.
“Indivisible Chicago is an important addition to our progressive coalition, and I’m honored to receive their first-ever endorsement,” said Newman. “Their members were important to our efforts in 2018, and both this endorsement and the volunteers it signals will help us implement our strategy to win in 2020.”
Regan noted that Indivisible Chicago has no current plans to endorse in other Congressional primaries, but member chapters may choose to do so, independent of the decisions of the Alliance.
About Indivisible Chicago Indivisible Chicago is a progressive coalition of neighborhood chapters throughout the Chicago area, launched in January, 2017. We are leaders in the grassroots movement to advance progressive values, candidates, and elected officials who will join us in supporting policies and programs that align with these values. Our proven track record includes field operations to help elect Illinois Representatives Sean Casten (IL06) and Lauren Underwood (IL14), knocking on 20,000 doors in the election’s last weekend alone. We also serve as reliable partners for impacted communities seeking to elevate their cause. This includes our role as the safety marshals for the 2018 March for Our Lives and coordinating logistics for the 2018 Families Belong Together rally, drawing 60,000 to Daley Plaza in support of immigrants seeking refuge at our southern border.
