Themes in Governance Questions

The category of “governance” came up all over the questions. These questions can generally be characterized as “How can I know that you are going to get it done?” whatever the “it” in the question is. This shows that the Indivisible membership is not just interested in a simple position statement; they are demanding that the candidates demonstrate what they have done on the issue in the past, and know how to work government to get things done if they become governor.

Related to the general governance were several questions about working the state legislature and government machinery that are perceived in the way of getting things done. Issues here are Corporate Influence, Corruption, Bipartisanship, and Michael Madigan (who was mentioned by name several times).

How will you address the dysfunction caused by the excessive power of Mike Madigan?
How do plan to work with Mike Madigan who seems to set up roadblocks unless he gets his way?
The governor's job greatly relies on working with the legislature. How would you improve the working relationship with the legislature and the leaders of those two houses?
One area where Illinois gets high rankings is in political corruption. Why should we trust you not to further embarrass us and how do you plan to address issues of ethics and cronyism both in the Office of Governor and, to the extent possible, within the Democratic party?
Give some concrete proposals that we could enact in the state to counteract the poison of excessive and dark money on our political process.

Addressing fair elections came up a lot in the form of: Campaign Finance, Electoral Reform, Gerrymandering, and Term Limits for state office holders. These include questions about the candidate’s position on fixing government through fair elections, the priority of the issue to the candidate, and what the candidate thinks should be done. Many of these mentioned the influence of money in elections.

This governor's race includes several very wealthy candidates. Do you support campaign finance reform to level the playing field and improve diverse representation at all levels of government?
What will you do to stop the "dark money" donor sources from evading the laws about transparency?
Will you commit to pulling IL out of the Cross Check system of voter suppression?

Kudos to Virginia for testing their election machines, finding them bad, and having the most recent 2017 election on paper ballots only across their state -- and look at the results!
